Welcome to "Capybara Japanese" (hereinafter referred to as "the App"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.
1. Data Collection
1.1 Locally Stored Data
The App stores the following data locally on your device:
- Learning Progress: Japanese characters and vocabulary learned, familiarity levels
- Quiz Records: Number of quizzes taken, correct answers, accuracy rate
- Streak Data: Current streak, longest streak, last study date
- Achievement Data: Unlocked achievement badges
- User Settings: Sound effects toggle, daily learning goals, Japanese proficiency level
- Content You Create: Dialogue books, text cards, custom words, saved vocabulary and folders
- Practice Records: Speaking and handwriting practice counts and accuracy
1.2 Data We Do NOT Collect
The App does NOT collect:
- Name, email, or other personally identifiable information
- Account credentials or passwords
- Location data
- Contact information
- Device identifiers used to track you across apps or websites
1.3 Microphone and Speech Recognition
The "Speak" practice feature requires microphone access to hear your pronunciation. Speech recognition is performed by Apple's on-device Speech framework. Audio is processed to produce a text result used only to score your pronunciation, and is not stored by us and not sent to our servers. Microphone access is requested only when you start a speaking exercise, and you may decline or revoke it in iOS Settings at any time — the rest of the App continues to work without it.
1.4 Handwriting Practice
Handwriting exercises are recognised on your device using Apple's Vision framework. Your strokes are not uploaded or retained after the exercise ends.
2. How We Use Data
All collected data is used solely for:
- Recording your learning progress
- Tracking your achievements
- Personalizing your learning experience
- Providing learning statistics
3. Data Storage and Security
3.1 Local Storage
All data is stored locally on your device using iOS UserDefaults. We do NOT upload your data to any servers or cloud services.
3.2 Data Retention
Your data remains on your device until you:
- Delete the App
- Manually reset progress in Settings
- Clear app data
3.3 Data Portability
Since data is stored locally only, your learning progress cannot be synced across devices. If you change devices or reinstall the App, your learning records cannot be recovered.
4. Third-Party Services
4.1 Pronunciation Audio
Pronunciation audio for kana, kanji and built-in vocabulary is generated in advance with ElevenLabs and bundled inside the App — playing it involves no network request.
When you generate audio for your own dialogue books, the text you supply is sent to ElevenLabs through our server to synthesise speech. Only that text is transmitted; it is not linked to any identity and we do not retain it after the audio is returned.
4.2 AI Text Analysis
The dialogue reader and text cards use Google's Gemini API, reached through our own server, to translate lines, add furigana and extract vocabulary.
The Japanese text you paste into these features is sent to Google for processing. Please do not paste private or sensitive information. We do not attach your identity to these requests and do not keep the text after the analysis is returned. On devices that support Apple Intelligence, some analysis runs on-device instead and no text leaves your phone.
4.3 Subscriptions
Capybara Pro subscriptions are sold through the Apple App Store and managed with RevenueCat, which records purchase and renewal status so the App knows whether your subscription is active. Payment details are handled entirely by Apple and are never visible to us or to RevenueCat.
Your subscription is identified by a randomly generated identifier stored on your device, not by your name or email address.
4.4 Usage Analytics
The App uses TelemetryDeck to count anonymous, aggregated events such as which screens are opened. TelemetryDeck is designed so that individual users cannot be identified or tracked across apps, and it is not used for advertising.
4.5 Optional Survey
If you choose to answer the in-app survey, your answers are sent to our own server. Participation is entirely voluntary and the survey does not ask for your name or contact details.
4.6 No Advertising
The App contains no advertising and no advertising SDKs. We do not sell or share your data with data brokers.
5. Children's Privacy
The App does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Since the App does not require account creation and does not collect personally identifiable information, it is suitable for users of all ages.
6. Changes to Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date. We recommend reviewing this policy periodically.
7. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Delete all local data through the "Reset Progress" function in Settings
- Uninstall the App at any time to remove all associated data
- Manage app permissions in your device settings
